What is an 'Indian Fusion' restaurant? The best way I can describe this as: Indian cooking techniques and spices applied to ingredients not normally found in traditional Indian dishes. Surprisingly, this works quite well - my main course for example used duck in a dish which would normally have contained lamb meat.
This restaurant presents itself different too - the decor reminds me more of a trendy pizza/pasta establishment than an Indian restaurant. Thankfully however, unlike previously visited places which were all show and no substance, this restaurant manages to deliver good quality food. The traditional and elegant outfits worn by the waitresses (I don't remember seeing waitresses in an Indian restaurant before) round up the classy feel imparted by the overall ambience. Although the open, light, airy and uncluttered feel of the main section of the restaurant where we dined won't be to everyone's liking, the booths situated at the rear looked like they would provide an intimate setting for small groups to dine.
All was not sweetness and light however, although the waitresses who took our initial orders were very friendly and efficient, the main waiter who served us subsequently and for the rest of the evening was forgetful and slow. There appeared to be a problem with transporting the food from the kitchen, which was situated in the basement, to the dining area. Although a dumb waiter was present, this was not used. Instead, cooked food was carried up the stairs by the chefs and left on a table at the back of the restaurant. When the waiter asked us whether we wanted our main courses now or later, we said now. Much later, the food arrived and some of the dishes were not that warm at all, as if the food had arrived when we chose to eat. (Cold fusion anyone?)
The lack of heat in the food and lack of response from the waiter spoilt what otherwise would have been an excellent meal. The food was good quality and presented unusual and interesting combinations of ingredients. If the kitchen to table delivery is sorted out, this restaurant is one to return to.

A blend of Indian fusion - Whatever that means. The starter was excellent but there was a lot of faffing about in being served with courses this was due to the fact that all food was carried upstairs from the down stairs kitchen. I can only assume the dumb waiter lift behind the counter was out of action.
We were given coffee and then desert and there seemed to be some sort of confusion between the staff for most of time. I hope things might improve if I should return again. I prefer restaurants to be better organised; the food was good though.

Chula promised much but only really partly delivered. The range on the menu was enormous with many interesting dishes contributing to the 'Indian Fusion' theme. I personally thought the food was of a very high quality but the portions were ludicrously small for an Indian restaurant. I believe that this was a deliberate move to give a modernistic, almost 'Nouvelle Cuisine', tag to the restaurant - but one which may in the long term backfire in terms of repeat custom.
The service was friendly enough but bizarrely incompetent: the starters arrived ok but then there was a 30 minute wait before the waiter came back to ask us if we wanted our main courses 'now or later'! We responded 'now' upon which there was a further 20 minute wait before the main courses arrived (albeit cold)! This is also the only restaurant I've been to where the desserts arrived AFTER the coffees!
Chula is also the name of the main martial arts henchman in the film The Man With The Golden Gun. He was last seen sinking into the canal after James Bond's boat had cut his boat in two with his own boat.
I would expect Chula restaurant to also sink without trace within the next few years.

The food was pretty good but was rather cold when it arrived.
The chef is obviously quite talented but ability does not extent beyond the kitchen.
